Federal Authorities Continue Arrests Despite Shutdown
Even with the government shutdown still in effect, federal immigration officials made several arrests of violent offenders on Thursday.
One official statement highlighted arrests of illegal immigrants found guilty of serious crimes, including the sexual abuse of minors.
The Department of Homeland Security provided a press release that showcased five notable arrests from that day, emphasizing that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) remains active despite the ongoing government stalemate.
The individuals apprehended included various offenders, including two convicted pedophiles and a rapist, showing a commitment to public safety. One noteworthy arrest was of Jose Rivera-Medrano, a 41-year-old from El Salvador, who had been previously sentenced to 20 years for sexually abusing a minor in Maryland in 2019.
Next on the list was Milton Antunes Bonilla, a 40-year-old from Honduras, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old in New York, resulting in a five-year prison term.
There was also Aaron Comisario-Galicia, a Mexican national with a conviction for rape in California, showing the range of serious offenses among those arrested.
Additionally, ICE apprehended Juan Raul Chavez-Reyes, a 33-year-old from Mexico, who was previously convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Texas.
Another arrest involved Joseph Perez de la Cruz, also from Mexico, who was sentenced for conspiring to transport illegal immigrants, endangering lives in the process.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin noted an alarming rise in threats against ICE officers, stating that there has been an 8,000% increase in death threats. She praised the dedication of ICE personnel in working to remove dangerous criminals from communities. McLaughlin concluded by expressing gratitude to the administration for their support in enhancing the safety of American neighborhoods.
