Father in Iceland Loses Custody After Opposing Son’s Gender Transition
A father in Iceland has expressed his devastation after losing his parental rights, which he attributes to his opposition to his 11-year-old autistic son’s gender reassignment. The case has gained traction internationally, even catching the attention of Elon Musk, who criticized the court’s emphasis on progressive ideologies over parental rights.
Alexandre Rocha, a French national residing in Iceland for 25 years, lost custody of his child’s mother last December. He believes that the judge’s ruling against him was influenced by his concerns regarding the long-term implications of puberty blockers and hormone therapy.
“This should be a crime,” Rocha stated, referring to medical interventions for children. He sees it as a form of abuse that should not be tolerated, expressing frustration that this ideology is being applied to children.
He pointed out that his child’s understanding had been heavily influenced by popular video games like Minecraft and Roblox, which he felt did not provide a solid foundation for grasping the lasting effects of a gender change.
Rocha highlighted the mental challenges typically faced by children post-separation and after an autism diagnosis, arguing that transitioning may seem appealing temporarily but doesn’t address deeper issues. “Over time, will they still be happy? Are we tackling the root problems?” he wondered aloud.
He noted that despite his child’s recent autism diagnosis—only eight months prior—the court seemed to overlook this during the proceedings. Children on the autism spectrum, Rocha said, might experience confusion about identity, sometimes wanting to identify as different creatures, like a cat.
When Rocha raised his concerns in court, he felt dismissed by an Icelandic endocrinologist, who stated under oath that there was “no problem” with the hormone treatment, ignoring underlying mental health factors.
Now removed from the decision-making process regarding his son’s medical treatment, he worries about the care his son could be receiving in his absence. “There’s a good chance he’s on hormone therapy, but we have no information,” he said.
Rocha expressed his concern that the child’s mother is pushing a more aggressive ideology, mentioning that advanced AI was needed to understand terms like “dead name,” which refers to a child’s birth name prior to a gender change.
“I can’t back this kind of rhetoric. It feels wrong,” he said, lamenting how discussions of such serious topics are being treated lightly in relation to children.
Recently, he learned that the mother had legally changed their son’s name to a feminine one without his consent, raising alarm in Rocha about the court’s priorities. He believes the legal actions against him weren’t truly about his child’s best interests but rather a systematic effort to silence dissent.
Rocha described the situation as a struggle against control and stated that his story has drawn international interest, including from Musk, who himself has been vocal about transgender issues after his own son’s transition.
In response to the situation, Musk remarked on social media that “the woke mind virus is also affecting Iceland,” which Rocha found surprising yet validating. “It’s nice to see that someone understands the fight we’re facing,” he said. He feels that, despite their different backgrounds, all parents share common challenges.
Outside the political discourse, Rocha misses the simple moments he used to spend with his son. “I long to read bedtime stories and cook together again,” he shared, reflecting on times spent watching classics like “Jurassic Park.” He has recently filed a fine against the boy’s mother, claiming she is obstructing his visitations by saying the child refuses to attend due to Rocha’s refusal to fully embrace the new identity.
Despite the emotional toll of the situation, he continues to advocate for parents to trust their instincts. “I’m here for my child’s future. That’s my priority,” Rocha said. “I hope that others will choose to speak up.”
The child’s mother could not be reached for comment regarding the ongoing issues.
