Brian Kohberger Sentenced to Life for Idaho Student Murders
In court on Wednesday, Brian Kohberger, the man convicted of killing a University of Idaho student back in November 2022, spoke just a few words when given the chance to explain his actions. “I will decline with respect,” he said, rising slightly from his seat.
Kohberger has received a sentence of four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, in addition to ten years for robbery and a financial penalty of $290,000 to the victim’s family. Judge Stephen Hippler remarked on the situation, indicating that Kohberger’s ongoing struggle for explanation only served to enhance his perceived power and control. He emphasized that it was time for Kohberger to move past seeking notoriety.
Emotions from Victims’ Families as Verdict Delivered
Kohberger pleaded guilty to the murders of four students: Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.
White House Responds to Kohberger’s Sentencing
In the wake of the verdict, White House press secretary Caroline Lewitt expressed condolences during a press conference. She stated that if President Trump were in power, he would have “forced the monster” responsible for these acts. Lewitt conveyed sorrow for the grief experienced by the victims’ families, saying, “Our nation will never forget you and the precious souls lost in this terrible evil act.” She offered prayers for all those impacted by this tragic event, notably the parents mourning their children.
