Judge Skeptical of Delay in Coberger Trial
A recent hearing regarding the murder trial of Brian Coberger suggested that the judge is likely to reject a request for a delay. This hearing took place on a Wednesday in front of ADA County Judge Steven Hippler, who oversees the fourth Judicial District including several counties such as Boise and Elmore.
During the proceedings, Judge Hippler indicated that he would consider the defense’s arguments but appeared doubtful. He also mentioned that both sides should proceed as if the trial would take place as planned. “I think there’s a good chance that you’ll be brought to trial on the date you’ve been instructed,” he remarked.
The trial is set for late July or early August, with the opening statement scheduled for August 11th. Coberger faces multiple counts of first-degree murder as well as a felony robbery charge related to the deaths of four University of Idaho students: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.
Evidence from investigators includes DNA found on a knife sheath at the crime scene linked to Coberger, which, as the affidavit states, connects him to the murders. Moreover, records show that his phone was traced to the vicinity of the crime scene at least a dozen times around the date of the murders on November 13, 2022.
Coberger has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His trial was initially scheduled for October 2nd but was postponed after he waived his right to a speedy trial.
