Idaho sheriff’s deputy shot and killed during traffic stop: ‘Our hearts break’

An Idaho sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed during a traffic stop Saturday night, authorities said.

According to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Tobin Boulter, 27, was shot as he approached the driver’s window of a gray Chevrolet Suburban he pulled over in Boise just before 9 p.m.

Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford said the driver, a 65-year-old man wanted on a misdemeanor warrant, fled after the shooting.

A citizen who witnessed Mr. Boulter being shot called 911 and rushed to the injured deputy, performing CPR until medical personnel arrived. Boulter was then taken to St. Alphonsus Medical Regional Center in Boise, where he died Sunday.

Boise Police Department officers quickly located the suspect’s vehicle unoccupied and, while searching the area, located a man believed to be the suspect outside a home, Boise Police Chief Ron Weinger said. .

Winegar said the man refused to surrender to police tactical units and opened fire on officers shortly after midnight. One officer returned fire, hitting the man.

According to the police chief, police officers rescued the man at the scene and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The man’s name has not yet been released.

During the standoff, police told some residents to leave the area and warned others to stay indoors, Winegar said.

After the initial shooting, a second deputy was involved in a two-vehicle crash while on his way to Mr. Boulter’s aid. The co-driver is in stable condition at the hospital, but the condition of the other driver is unknown.

After Mr. Boulter died at the hospital, Mr. Clifford gave an emotional press conference in which he thanked the paramedics and members of the public who performed CPR on Mr. Boulter.

“I think this shows what kind of community we live in, where there are evil people who do bad things, but there are also good people who help us and come to our aid. ” he said.

Clifford said Boulter was the county’s first sheriff’s deputy to die in the line of duty. He has seven years of law enforcement experience and has been with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office since January and previously worked for the Meridian and Pleasant Hill Police Departments in California.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little ordered U.S. and Idaho flags lowered to half-staff in memory of the fallen deputy.
