IDF Does Not Impose Penalties on Soldiers Following Attack on Catholic Church

Israeli Defense Force Confirms Church Strike in Gaza

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has acknowledged a mistake during a strike that hit a Catholic Church in Gaza. Interestingly, no disciplinary measures were announced for the soldiers involved, which raises questions about accountability.

Among the injured was Parish Priest Gabriel Romanelli. While the IDF has, in the past, punished personnel in cases involving civilian casualties, it seems this incident hasn’t warranted the same kind of response, as noted by a report from the Jerusalem Post.

According to an internal investigation by the IDF Southern Command, a misfired mortar struck the church during an operation in the area. Photographic evidence indicates that the church’s roof was impacted near its main cross.

The IDF has claimed that its military personnel are committed to minimizing harm to civilians and respect for religious sites. However, their English-language account has yet to comment on the investigation.

Internationally, the attack has drawn criticism from various leaders. For instance, former President Donald Trump reached out to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shortly after the incident to discuss it. Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Catholic Church, condemned the actions of the Israeli army in a recent message, emphasizing the need to halt the “wildness of war.”

Pope Leo XIV also lamented how this strike adds to the ongoing military actions affecting civilians and places of worship in Gaza, renewing calls for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In light of the incident, Piabattista Cardinal Pizza Villa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, commented that while they know the church was hit, the specifics of how it happened remain uncertain. He expressed concern over the inability to verify all details surrounding the strike.

The IDF has stated that it is refining its guidelines for military actions near religious sites and other sensitive areas, indicating that changes have been made to improve ammunition accuracy following this strike. Additionally, they’ve noted efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the church after the incident and coordinated actions to assist in the evacuation of those injured. Christian leaders were also supported in their visits to churches in the area.

In conclusion, the IDF expressed regret over the harm caused to civilians, but the broader implications of this incident continue to unfold.
