IDF Finds Loaded Rocket Launchers in Rafah

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) discovered a loaded rocket launcher during an operation in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, now in its second week.

In the days following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks, near-constant rocket fire from Gaza into Israel has largely subsided. However, in recent weeks Hamas terrorists have fired rockets at the Keren Shalom crossing, near Rafah, where humanitarian supplies enter Gaza, and at the city of Sderot, near northern Gaza.

The IDF identified a loaded rocket launcher in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip. May 16, 2024 (IDF)

The IDF said in a statement:

Soldiers from the 162nd Division’s 401st Brigade Combat Team continue to conduct precision operations in specific areas east of Rafah.

During a brigade-level operation, soldiers from the 414th Battalion, part of the 401st Brigade Combat Team, flew a drone inside Israeli territory to locate a rocket launcher loaded with long-range rockets and ready to fire. . These launchers have been used by terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip in recent months to fire rockets at Israel. The rocket launcher was destroyed by the Israel Defense Forces.

In another targeted raid, soldiers discovered critical rocket launch infrastructure and ready-to-launch rockets in the Rafah area. The launch infrastructure had been used to fire rockets into Israel in recent months, but has now been destroyed.

Rockets may be launched from mobile pads or tripods. They are often launched from shafts dug into the ground or even embedded within buildings. They are directed to civilian centers in Israel. Each launch is a war crime.

The fact that the IDF has discovered and destroyed rocket launchers provides further legitimacy to the ongoing Rafah operation, which is opposed by the Biden administration and much of the international community. Israel claims the last four intact Hamas battalions are in towns along the Egyptian border.
