IDF Gets Ready for Next, Critical Stage of Assault on Hamas in Gaza City

Israel Prepares for New Phase in Gaza Operation

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are gearing up for a crucial next step in their assault on Gaza, specifically targeting the last remaining Hamas stronghold in an operation designated “Gideon’s Tank II.”

The army has summoned 60,000 reservists for a ground offensive aimed at fully dismantling Hamas. If feasible, they also hope to rescue one of the 20 remaining Israeli hostages; 28 hostages are thought to have already died.

IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stated on Tuesday that the military insists on achieving “nothing less than a decisive victory” over terrorist factions. In another effort, the IDF is conducting a series of combat drills to prepare for missions in both open and urban settings in northern Gaza.

Moreover, the IDF is organizing the evacuation of thousands of Palestinian civilians to safer zones in the southern Gaza Strip. This initiative aims to reduce harm to civilians while creating opportunities for more precise operations against Hamas.

However, a recent report indicated that the first phase of Operation Gideon encountered significant errors, like humanitarian supplies being seized by Hamas to replenish their resources. Israel faced considerable pressure to enhance its humanitarian aid after inaccurate reports about starving children emerged.

There is also notable dissent among senior government officials, as Zamir has reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consider partial hostage deals that Hamas has now shown willingness to accept, following a sustained military campaign.

Left-wing protests, which had faded since the attacks on October 7, 2023, have surged once more, advocating for the release of hostages. A number of reservists have publicly declared their refusal to fulfill their military obligations.

This dissent appears to signify a win for the late Hamas spokesman, Abu Obeida, who was killed by the IDF the previous week. Public sentiment in Israel seems to be shifting as a means to influence the military’s actions.
