Idrissa Gana Gueye of Everton sent off for striking his own teammate in surprising victory

Bizarre Red Card Incident at Old Trafford

A strange situation unfolded at Old Trafford when Everton’s midfielder, Idrissa Gana Gueye, received a red card after he punched a teammate during the team’s victory against Manchester United. This incident happened just 13 minutes into the match.

It came shortly after Bruno Fernandes nearly scored for Manchester United, sending a shot just over the bar due to some apparent miscommunication. Everton was lucky to escape that moment without conceding a goal.

Once the ball was out of play, Gueye became visibly upset and confronted teammate Michael Keane about what had occurred. A lively argument ensued, and, at one point, Keane shoved Gueye, who then apparently slapped Keane in the face.

Everton’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, was approaching when he quickly intervened to diffuse the situation, firmly guiding Gueye off the pitch.

As Pickford escorted him, Gueye continued to shout at Keane. Eventually, Gueye was shown a red card for violating the violent conduct rules set by IFAB.

The rules state that “a player who intentionally strikes an opponent or another person in the head or face with his hand or arm when not challenging the ball is guilty of an act of violence unless the force used is negligible.” Keane later apologized for his role in the altercation.

Gueye issued a statement acknowledging his actions: “I want to apologize to Michael Keane. I take full responsibility and also apologize to my teammates, the staff, and the fans. What happened doesn’t reflect my values. While emotions can run high, it’s no excuse for such behavior. I’ll make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Despite being reduced to ten men, Everton managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. Keenan Dewsbury-Hall scored the only goal in the 29th minute, sealing a remarkable win for Everton at Old Trafford, marking their second victory at this venue in 33 Premier League encounters against Manchester United.
