If Mike McCarthy’s Job Is in Danger, Mine Should be Too

Dak Prescott had a very memorable night on Sunday, when the Cowboys were beaten at home by the rival Green Bay Packers for the first time in a while.

Prescott's stats for this game were great, and the final score of 48-32 doesn't seem like a proper blowout loss. But this is one example where the numbers definitely lie. With the Packers leading 48-16 with just under six minutes left, 210 of Prescott's 403 yards came when the Packers defense had already got the game in the bag and was playing loose.

The shocking loss led many to speculate about not only Prescott's own position, but the future of head coach Mike McCarthy. After the game, reporters asked the Cowboys signalman about his head coach's future, and Prescott not only defended his coach, but said he himself should be monitored.

“Tonight was the worst. That's all there was to it,” Prescott said. “I started a little bit late, but at that point it didn't matter. I fought. That's all I really know how to do. But it's about winning, winning in the playoffs and fighting. It's about going to the last game and winning that too. Yeah, it's tough.”

“He was great,” Prescott continued of McCarthy. “I don't know [McCarthy’s future] can [in doubt], but business understands. If that's the case, then honestly, it should be about me too. I was able to get through this season thanks to that person. This team was able to succeed because of him. I understand that winning the Super Bowl is important, but that's the standard in the league and definitely should be the standard here. I understand that, but if that's the case, please add me to the list. ”

Mr. Prescott is on the “list” whether he wishes to attend or not.

The former fourth-rounder, who fought his way into the starting job while then-starter Tony Romo was injured, will carry a $59.455 million cap hit next year. That's a price tag that will not only be a tough sell to fans after another blowout loss in the playoffs, but also raise concerns about the potential head coaching position that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants to bring in. Jones' thoughts on Prescott's future with the Cowboys? That doesn't necessarily seem promising.

“Actually, I haven't thought about this at all. So I'm not going to comment on it because I haven't thought about it,” Jones said. “For the last few weeks, ever since I found out this game would be my home ground, I was fully expecting and planning to go from this game to another game at this stadium. So I changed my thought process. I'm going to completely get back to basics and think about something other than this game here next week.”
