Ketanji Brown Jackson and Kamala Harris: A Reflective Perspective
Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson isn’t exactly regarded as an extraordinary figure, but maybe we should count our blessings. It’s worth considering how things could’ve been worse—like if Judge Kamala Harris had been in the running for that position.
CNN anchor Jake Tapper hinted at this in a promotional chat about Joe Biden’s latest book discussing cognitive decline, mentioning that Harris might have been considered for a spot on the Supreme Court. “They made her a Supreme Court judge, didn’t they?” he remarked during a discussion with co-authors Alex Thompson and Scott Galloway. “They probably thought about making you one when the opportunity arose. If you decide to step down and run for president later, well, that’s an option.”
In his comments, Tapper didn’t exactly shy away from suggesting that Harris doesn’t match Jackson’s legal acumen. While he seemed to be giving Jackson some acknowledgement—albeit a complicated one—the idea that Harris might rival her in capabilities is a curious thought. Just imagine Harris’s dissenting opinions making headlines.
I mean, despite Harris’s obvious strengths, there’s something to be said about how someone like her could land on the Supreme Court, seemingly moving up the ranks almost effortlessly. “Can’t you just step in as vice president? No worries, I’ll be set for life interpreting the Constitution,” he quipped.
It’s worth remembering, Tapper is the same person who previously expressed a desire to become a “bad” in response to a meme portraying Harris as a fresh face of change. Now, he’s casting doubt on her legal credentials. Maybe it’s part of his effort to navigate past his earlier missteps regarding Biden’s signs of cognitive decline?
He’s not alone in this speculation. CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers had also thrown out the idea that, following Donald Trump’s 2024 re-election, if Justice Sonia Sotomayor were to resign, Harris could potentially be in line for that post.
Tapper posed the “big question” surrounding Biden’s presidency: what really goes on behind the scenes? “I got some answers, but honestly…nothing concrete,” he admitted. Anyone who tuned into his show through Biden’s presidency might have felt a sense of déjà vu. “Have you ever asked a single question?”
Megyn Kelly recently pressed Tapper on this topic, pointing out that he covered Biden’s presidency extensively yet didn’t touch on any of his cognitive issues. “It often seemed like you were covering for him,” she stated. Tapper responded, claiming that wasn’t accurate, even as Kelly showcased evidence supporting her argument, recalling moments when he questioned Biden’s mental capacity.
In a conversation about comments made regarding cognitive decline, Tapper asked Lara Trump how such remarks might affect kids who stutter, asserting that he wouldn’t presume to diagnose anyone’s cognitive abilities.
The left seems to take particular pleasure in critiquing its own, and if Tapper is leaning into this approach, perhaps it’s a bid to establish himself as a serious journalist. Who knows?
