The Giffords Law Center has put out its yearly State Gun Law Scorecard, evaluating states based on their gun safety measures. How your state scores can really show how much it respects the American right to bear arms.

This scorecard tends to favor states that impose various restrictions such as mandatory safe storage, assault weapon bans, and universal background checks, which can often treat responsible gun owners as if they’re potential criminals. The Giffords team looks at each state’s laws and compares them with recent CDC data on gun fatalities, aiming to support their claim that tougher gun laws lead to fewer deaths. However, it’s worth noting that not all gun deaths are homicides; a significant number are unfortunately suicides.

California came out on top with an “A” grade, reflecting its extensive regulations that some argue have turned the state into a highly controlled environment. In stark contrast, states like Wyoming and Mississippi earned an “F,” as they resist pressure from gun control advocates. Interestingly, an “F” indicates that those states value personal freedoms over restrictive policies rather than reflecting a failure.

Critics suggest that the methodology behind the scorecard is flawed, as it awards points for laws assumed to reduce gun violence while overlooking the fact that criminals generally disregard such laws.

Take cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles—all in states rated highly by the Giffords scorecard. Despite this, they routinely struggle with high rates of gun-related homicides. In fact, some rural areas with lesser regulations manage to maintain lower crime rates without the same level of oversight.

If your state scores well on this scorecard, it might indicate that local leaders have given in to the extreme narratives pushed by certain groups. A more effective approach to curbing gun violence could be real accountability for criminals rather than relying solely on regulations.
