Iga Swiatek Exits US Open After Loss to Amanda Anisimova
Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek faced American Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Wednesday, ultimately losing in straight sets. Following her defeat, Swiatek engaged in a somewhat tense conversation with reporters.
This season has been quite good for Swiatek. She clinched her first Wimbledon title and reached the semifinals of the Australian Open. However, the elusive second US Open title continues to evade her; she was ousted in the quarterfinals in 2024 and earlier in the fourth round in 2023. Notably, she secured two WTA singles titles this year.
During the post-match discussion, while Swiatek didn’t explicitly blame fatigue for her performance, it was clear that her competitive spirit and some frustration contributed to the heated exchange with the media. One reporter asked her if she needed a “mental break,” to which she responded, “Why do you say that?”
When pressed further about needing a “mental break,” she retorted, “You think you need a mental break?” The reporters acknowledged that they might also benefit from such a break.
In a lighter moment, Swiatek playfully asked one reporter, “Then what are you doing here?” after he mentioned he needed to stay until the end of the tournament. “Lucky,” she added, perhaps hinting at her own disappointment.
Ranked second in the world, Swiatek’s tournament ended early due to this rematch with Anisimova, a player she had faced at Wimbledon. Anisimova won decisively with scores of 6-4 and 6-3 and will move on to meet Naomi Osaka in the next round.
