Iga Swiatek Advances to Quarter-Finals at US Open
Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek took a moment to text her coach rather than immediately proceeding with a post-match interview after her convincing win against Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, which ended 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round of the 2025 US Open.
Seeded second, Swiatek mentioned that she reached out to her coach to schedule some practice time ahead of her quarter-final match against Amanda Anisimova. The American player secured her spot by defeating Brazil’s Beatrice Haddad Maia earlier on the same day.
There was a bit of a pause during the interview, as the interviewer asked, “Are you interested in that text message telling you who’s going to?” This came after watching Swiatek focus on her phone while at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
“Oh, um, it’s just my coach. I asked them to reserve like a 10-minute practice court if possible,” the 24-year-old explained, taking a casual tone.
For guidance, Swiatek has recently teamed up with Wim Fissette after ending her previous partnership with Tomasz Wiktorowski last October.
The upcoming quarter-final will be a repeat of the Wimbledon final from earlier in the summer, where Swiatek dominated Anisimova with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Feeling strong, Swiatek expressed her determination, adding that she’s entirely focused on achieving victory.
Reflecting on her performance, she mentioned, “At first, I didn’t realize she was playing so fast, and the courts felt a little different.”
Once settled, she felt in her element, saying, “I think I forced the ball at times, making some risky decisions. But overall, I’m satisfied with my serving and the quality of my game.”
