IL man sentenced to prison for hit-and-run crash that killed retired officer

A suburban Chicago man who pleaded guilty in a hit-and-run crash that killed a former Chicago police officer in 2022 has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.

Ted Prebritis, of Palatine, Illinois, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of failure to report an accident and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, WLS-TV reported. He was recognized for his work having already spent about two years in prison.

Prebritis was originally charged with several felonies, including failure to report a bodily injury accident and reckless homicide in a motor vehicle in the death of 57-year-old Rick Harjan.

Chicago police officer shot dead, suspect in critical condition

Harjan died in January 2022 when he was struck and killed by a car driven by 62-year-old Prebritis while crossing the road in Chicago's Edison Park neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Prebritis surrendered to police about a month after Harjan's death.

According to the police accident report, Prebritis did not stop to help Harjan and continued driving and fled the scene. A passerby performed CPR on Harjan, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.
