Omar Calls for Accountability in ICE Operations
In Washington, Rep. Ilhan Omar urged Americans to record Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities, critiquing the Trump administration for commenting on the shooting death of Renee Good before a thorough investigation was conducted.
“It’s really important for Americans to document and create the level of accountability and transparency that we need,” the Minnesota congresswoman stated on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” this past Sunday.
She pointed out that in Minneapolis, ICE agents often arrive in unmarked cars, sometimes wearing masks, and approach vehicles aggressively.
According to officials, Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent involved in Good’s fatal shooting after allegedly driving his SUV toward her, recorded the incident on his cellphone shortly after it occurred.
ICE Director Todd Lyons mentioned on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing” that Ross did not have a body camera since the agency was still in the implementation phase.
Omar also criticized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for what she described as repeated misrepresentations regarding high-profile ICE operations.
The congresswoman, representing Minnesota’s 5th District, suggested Good was in distress when approached by ICE agents, expressing her concern over their actions. “Renee Nicole Macklin… you can clearly see the car moving,” Omar noted, questioning how a trained officer would position themselves in front of a moving vehicle.
Footage depicted Ross standing in front of Good’s SUV as it accelerated toward him, at which point he discharged three rounds, resulting in her death.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that Ross was taken to a hospital following the incident but was later released after being “hit by a vehicle.”
While defending Good, Omar criticized Trump administration officials for their rash comments about the shooting, stating, “If you look at the videos… what is described in them is not what actually happened.” She referred to the administration’s rhetoric as “unjustifiable” to the populace.
Last year, Omar stirred controversy by alleging that ICE had interrogated her son, a claim that the DHS refuted.
In response to a significant welfare fraud scandal in Minnesota, Trump’s administration has increased ICE’s presence in the state. Omar condemned this effort, arguing it aims to instill fear and disrupt the daily lives of residents. “There are ways to investigate fraud… under the Biden administration, we’re pursuing it in Minnesota. There’s no reason for such extreme rhetoric,” she concluded.
