Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota recently withdrew her candidacy after her son was stopped by ICE during a traffic stop on Sunday.
According to Omar, her son was approached by ICE after a quick stop at Target, where he was asked for identification. Although she accused the agency of racial profiling, her son was let go after showing his passport.
She remarked, “There’s nothing worse than when people come in and do all kinds of horrible things.”
Omar claimed, “They’re doing racial profiling,” mentioning that ICE appears to be specifically targeting young Somali-looking males whom they suspect are in the country illegally. “I was pulled over by an ICE officer after stopping at Target yesterday. Once he showed his passport ID, they released him,” she said.
Her political allies rallied in support, reinforcing the idea that Omar was singled out because of her race. Strikingly, neither law enforcement nor lawmakers have explained the rationale behind her son’s initial stop.
According to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, “Congressman Omar’s son was pulled over by ICE while he was following the law on his way home from Target. This is racial profiling, not a targeted operation to find violent criminals.”
In spite of accusations of racial motivation coming from the left, President Donald Trump has continued to criticize Omar and Somali immigrants, citing issues related to assimilation and fraud rates.
He stated, “There’s nothing worse than someone coming in and doing all kinds of horrible things. She comes from a place where she shouldn’t be telling us what to do.”
Trump went on to express concerns over financial misconduct, claiming, “What’s happening in Minnesota and Somalia is billions of dollars being stolen like baby candy. We’re not going to let this go.”
