Ilhan Omar does not respond after NBC pulls back part of ICE report about a 5-year-old girl.

Rep. Ilhan Omar Responds to ICE Incident Involving Autistic Girl

Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota recently made headlines after reacting to a troubling incident reported by NBC News. The article described a situation where an ICE agent allegedly pressured a 5-year-old autistic girl outside her home in Massachusetts in an attempt to apprehend her father.

Omar criticized the reported actions of the ICE agent, calling them “mean and cruel” and reiterating her stance to abolish the agency. This statement came as she quoted the article posted on social media platform X, where the troubling encounter was first shared. However, NBC has since deleted that initial post, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has disputed the narrative suggested in the article.

Interestingly, while the post by NBC was removed, Omar’s response remained active online days later. Efforts to reach her office for further comments on whether she would amend her post went unanswered.

A video that surfaced, obtained by Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra, shows a law enforcement vehicle outside the girl’s home in Leominster, Massachusetts, with several male officers present. The child’s father, Edwards Hip Mezia, reportedly felt he was being chased, which led him to run toward a parking lot. It’s claimed that during this chaos, an officer grabbed his daughter, prompting her mother to inform the agents about the girl’s condition and request her return.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin responded to Omar’s remarks, labeling them as “cruel” and asserting that the agent did not use the girl as “bait.” She elaborated, saying that the target of the operation, Hip Mezia, had a record that included domestic abuse, among other charges, and had abandoned his daughter in the car during the incident.

This incident comes just a day before a separate violent event at an ICE facility in Dallas, Texas, where a gunman opened fire, resulting in one death and serious injuries to two others. DHS indicated that this shooting appeared to stem from animosity toward the agency.
