Ilhan Omar States Immigration Enforcement Is Not Related to Public Safety

Omar Criticizes Immigration Raids as Political Show

Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar expressed her concerns on Wednesday about the Trump administration’s immigration raids, describing them as mere political theater.

This week, the administration intends to send about 100 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to Minneapolis and St. Paul to carry out final deportation orders against undocumented Somalis. On the program “The Read with Jake Tapper,” Omar stated that the presence of federal agents has created unrest by stopping U.S. citizens and demanding proof of citizenship. She contended that this operation does not contribute to community safety.

“We know that it has nothing to do with keeping the community safe. It’s actually terrorizing the community and creating fear,” Omar said during her conversation with Tapper.

Omar further pointed out that the crackdown seemed excessive.

“Over 90% of Somalis are citizens of this country, and most were born here. If someone is a criminal, they typically already have a deportation order in effect,” Omar added. “Today, we witnessed citizens being stopped, presenting their passports to prove their identity.”

The directive from the administration focuses primarily on individuals with existing deportation orders but leaves room for the detention of others with unresolved immigration cases. Minnesota’s Democratic Governor, Tim Walz, condemned this approach as a politically motivated dragnet that indiscriminately targets individuals.

In a related context, a Somali national in Minnesota was implicated in funneling a significant amount of money to a terrorist organization responsible for multiple attacks in East Africa, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 Americans. One individual was convicted in November 2024 for scheming a hijacking similar to the 9/11 attacks.

On Friday, President Trump announced plans to terminate the federal Temporary Protected Status program for tens of thousands of Somalis residing in Minnesota, claiming that Governor Walz has allowed the state to become a center for extensive fraud and money laundering operations.
