Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat known for her progressive stances, is under fresh scrutiny regarding her finances. Accusations of immigration fraud have followed her in recent years, and now new filings suggest that she and her now-husband, Tim Mynett, could have a negative net worth.
Republicans have expressed dissatisfaction with Omar’s claim that severe fluctuations in her financial estimates were due to an “accounting error” that has since been rectified.
The Somali-born congresswoman raised eyebrows last year with her financial disclosure for 2024, indicating that she and her husband had assets ranging from $6 million to $30 million. This revelation came at a time when both the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., and the DOJ’s Public Integrity Division reportedly opened an investigation into her financial dealings.
The couple’s newfound wealth reportedly stems from Mynett’s venture capital management firm, Rose Lake Capital LLC, and his now-closed winery, eStCru LLC. Interestingly, these claims appeared to contradict her previous assertion that she is “not a billionaire.” The May 2025 filing raised questions from House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and others about how her husband had accumulated such wealth in just two years.
Despite having claimed that their property value was less than $208,000 in 2023, records revealed that Rose Lake Capital had only $42.44 in its bank account a year prior. Former President Trump also weighed in, asserting that there’s “no way” such wealth could be accrued while serving as a politician.
Subsequently, Omar filed an amended disclosure in 2024, now stating that her and her husband’s assets were worth somewhere between $18,004 and $95,000. A report highlighted that Mynett’s business would be considered worthless when debts were included.
“This revised disclosure supports our long-held view: female members of Congress are not billionaires,” Omar’s spokesperson said, explaining that she revised her filing once the error was recognized.
After Vice President J.D. Vance insinuated last month that she was under Justice Department investigation, Omar submitted her financial disclosure for the 2025 fiscal year. According to new filings, Mynett reportedly earned no income from Rose Lake last year and only made about $1,000 from eStCru, a drop from $201 previously claimed.
Omar stated that their combined assets last year totaled between $20,000 and $125,000 while their liabilities amounted to $30,000 to $100,000. This would place her net worth between -$80,000 and $95,000. Omar’s spokesperson reiterated that the inaccurate figures stemmed from incomplete information and emphasized that they corrected the errors voluntarily.
Republican National Committee spokesperson Delaney Bomer noted that voters are becoming increasingly aware of what she termed Omar’s “corrupt lies.” She accused Omar of engaging in fraudulent activities that have cost taxpayers billions.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota) added that both Omar and her husband should be held accountable for what he called dubious financial disclosures.
