Rep. Ilhan Omar’s DC home searched by HSI agents
Early Monday morning, federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted a search at the Washington, D.C., residence of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota. This information was relayed by an inside source.
During the early hours, several federal agents wearing HSI jackets were observed outside Omar’s home. According to two individuals familiar with the investigation, this search is part of a criminal fraud inquiry related to the congresswoman’s immigration paperwork, completed by her late father when she was a child.
Omar took to X to respond to the raid, condemning it as a tactic used by former President Donald Trump to “target political enemies” with “baseless lies” and asserted, “I will not be silenced.”
The HSI operation began around 6 a.m., led by both HSI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with the Department of Justice (DOJ) also involved in the investigation. A DOJ spokesperson confirmed that the enforcement action was part of an ongoing federal investigation and described it as “criminal” in nature.
HSI serves as the main investigative arm of the DHS, with responsibilities that include tackling cross-border crime and threats such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and cybercrime. They also play a significant role in counterterrorism efforts in the U.S.
A representative for Omar has not yet commented on this development, and officials from the White House and DHS have also refrained from providing any statements.
Omar later shared a post stating, “I’m ok.” She emphasized that the raid is an attempt to wield federal law enforcement against political adversaries. Her message accused Trump of launching targeted attacks against her over the past ten years with unfounded accusations and smear campaigns, calling the raid an escalation of his political intimidation tactics.
In a message from her official X account, she condemned the actions of Trump’s DHS as an “outrageous abuse of power,” arguing that it marks a significant overreach in the use of federal resources against perceived political foes. She insisted that she has done nothing wrong and asserted that no president should manipulate federal power for intimidation purposes.
The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced plans for a rally to support Omar later that day. Their Executive Director, Jaylani Hussein, stated this is a show of solidarity reflecting the community’s commitment against racism, political intimidation, and the erosion of democratic representation.
In mid-September, Tom Homan, who serves as Trump’s Border Czar, indicated that Omar was part of an ongoing criminal investigation but did not provide specifics about its focus.
Omar has faced scrutiny on multiple fronts during her congressional career, particularly over her financial disclosures. In 2024, she reported her husband’s assets between $6 million and $30 million, but a more recent report revised these shared assets significantly down to a maximum of $125,000, suggesting a multimillion-dollar decrease and perhaps a negative net worth when faced with their combined debts.
Additionally, both Omar and her husband have reported individual debts ranging from $15,000 to $50,000, attributed to student loans and credit card debts, respectively. Omar has consistently declined to clarify the details surrounding her financial disclosures.
Throughout her time in Congress, Omar has dealt with persistent allegations related to a 2009 marriage to her brother, which some claim was part of an immigration fraud scheme. A federal prosecutor has mentioned that the statute of limitations may complicate further investigations into that issue.
This summer, Omar also garnered media attention when her son’s residence was searched in connection to allegations regarding illegal firearms and ammunition linked to his roommate.
