Meet Ilia Marinin: The Figure Skating Prodigy
If you’re not a regular figure skating fan and usually only tune in during the Winter Olympics, there’s still time to catch up. Next year’s competition in Milan-Cortina will put a spotlight on a name you’ll want to remember: Ilia Marinin.
At just 20 years old, Marinin is a remarkable talent in figure skating. He’s been performing at such an exceptional level that it would be surprising if he didn’t clinch the gold medal next year. His achievements include winning the world championship and a standout performance at the 2025 French Grand Prix, where he triumphed by an impressive 40 points. It was almost like he was competing against inexperienced skaters, as he effortlessly secured victories in both the short program and the free skate.
Born in Virginia in 2004 to Tatyana Marinina, a former skater for Uzbekistan, and Roman Skorniakov, Marinin has been captivating audiences since he made his senior debut in the 2021-22 season. He’s earned the nickname ‘Quad God’ due to his unmatched prowess on the ice. His rapid ascent in the sport has seen him claim two World Championships, two Grand Prix titles, and three U.S. Championships—all in a remarkably short span. Notably, he was also the first to successfully execute a quadruple axel, which is now a staple in his routines. Plus, he’s introduced creative choreography, including the “Raspberry Twist,” named for the translation of his last name in Russian.
But it’s not just about the jumps or elements he performs—Marinin brings a distinctive flair and style to his routines. Imagining a perfect figure skater, you’d think they were crafted in a lab. He seamlessly combines the elegance and artistry typical of Eastern European skaters with the technical skill often seen in Asian performances, not to mention the attitude and musicality that characterize American skating.
As preparations gear up for the upcoming competition, the men’s figure skating event is shaping up to be quite the showdown. Marinin’s main competitor is Adam Hsiao Him Hua from France, who bested him early in his senior career at the World Championships. However, since that time, Marinin has consistently come out on top in their matchups, including a recent victory in Paris by a striking 40 points.
It’s been a while since an athlete has taken the sports scene by storm like Marinin, but he’s definitely one to watch.
