Sentencing of El Salvadoran Immigrant for Child Rape in Virginia Beach
A man from El Salvador has received a 30-year prison sentence for repeatedly raping an 11-year-old girl in Virginia Beach, as announced by local authorities. The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office provided updates on Ricardo Leonel Mejia’s status and mentioned ongoing public investigations into the case.
According to the release, Mejia, now in custody, will serve his sentence in the Virginia Department of Corrections before he is transferred to ICE custody.
This case has ignited discussions among Virginia leaders about the state’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger indicated that if she takes office, one of her initial actions would be to reverse the immigration enforcement policy set by Governor Glenn Youngkin, which labeled Virginia a “sanctuary state.” This policy restricts local police from aiding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in cases like Mejia’s, where an undocumented immigrant is convicted of a serious crime.
In response, Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earl Sears expressed her outrage on social media, stating the situation made her “sick beyond words.”
Mejia, 35, pled guilty in the Virginia Beach Circuit Court to multiple counts of child rape and other offenses. The assaults occurred in 2024 while he was working on a home renovation. The abuse came to light after the victim’s mother found her daughter in bed trying to escape through a locked door using a butter knife.
After fleeing through a window, Mejia was later captured and arrested. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed his illegal status in the country and took him into custody following his sentencing. He will remain detained for additional proceedings after serving time in the Virginia correctional facility.
During his court appearance, Mejia offered an apology to the victim, acknowledging the pain caused and stating, “I know I’m not the only one who’s going through this. I’m sorry for the pain she’s going through this process.”
Records indicate Mejia was booked at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center on October 9, 2024. Further comments from the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office have been requested.
