In an interview with KQED on Friday, Los Angeles City Council member Eunice Hernandez was asked how much pain the city should be prepared to suffer if the Trump administration cuts federal funding to the city because of its sanctuary status. He answered, “How much pain do you consider?” “Illegal immigration is part of the fabric of the city of Los Angeles.” “We must do everything we can to protect our families.” Where to spend your money so it can be put into more effective places We can find different ways to reevaluate the economy of the city of Los Angeles if we lose a significant portion of our immigrant community because we cannot afford not to protect these people and keep families together. The whole thing will collapse.”
KQED host Saul Gonzalez said, “If the Trump administration is going to retaliate against Los Angeles, by cutting federal funding for everything, maybe things that really matter to voters, how much more will we have to do? “Do you think we should endure pain?” he asked. How can we ensure illegal aliens are protected in LA? ”
Hernandez responded: [many] Many of our families are mixed immigrants, and we must do everything we can to protect them. And I believe there are other ways we can bring in resources. However, I believe that when problems or crises arise, we have to be more strategic and go back to the drawing board. ”
Gonzalez then asked, “But what if the Trump administration came along and said it wanted federal funds for rail extensions, mass transit projects, and housing programs?” Forget it. You say, what, is it worth the cost? ”
Hernandez said, “I believe that to keep families together, we have a place to find resources that we can turn to. We cannot continue to separate families. So we… Allows you to use your budget innovatively, allowing you to put money where it is most effective. We can't afford not to protect these people and keep their families together, so we can find different ways to reevaluate where we spend our money. If we lost a significant number, the entire economy of the city of Los Angeles would collapse.”
