Illegal immigrants arrested on military base for trespassing walk free after posting five-figure bail

Two Jordanian nationals who were arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a Marine Corps base in Virginia while in the country illegally have been released from federal custody after posting bail, federal authorities confirmed to Fox News Digital.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official confirmed to Fox News Digital that Hasan Yousef Hamdan and Mohamed Khail Dabboos were granted bail by an immigration judge in June.

Bail was set at $15,000 and $10,000 for Hamdan and Dabous, respectively. Conditions of their release include appearing for immigration proceedings and staying away from Quantico or other military installations.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Virginia federal court in September.

Hamdan entered the US illegally in April through the San Diego Sector of the US Border Patrol and was released. ICE told Fox News that Dabous had overstayed his student visa and was in the US illegally.

ICE officials said they had no reason to believe the suspects had any ties to terrorist organizations and that “no adverse intelligence was identified.”

“They were afforded due process,” a federal official told Fox News. “We have no information that either of them is affiliated with any nefarious organization.”

ICE previously said one of the men was arrested in April near San Ysidro, California, after entering the country illegally, and the other was for overstaying his student visa. Despite their release, ICE said the two remain in deportation proceedings.

The incident happened on May 3 at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, where a spokesperson for the Marine Corps base said two people in a box truck were stopped at the gates.

The driver reportedly told police he made deliveries for the post office and worked for an Amazon subcontractor.

“At that time, a military police officer noticed the driver had ignored the officer’s direct commands and continued to move the vehicle to the side of the detention center, attempting to enter Marine Corps Base Quantico,” spokesman Capt. Michael Curtis said in a statement. Authorities then arrested the two men on suspicion of trespassing and turned them over to ICE.

It is not yet clear how the two men met or what their intentions were in trying to break into a military facility.

While the incident raised concerns about a possible terror attack, ICE has repeatedly stressed that there is no indication that the two men pose a threat to public safety or national security, and that both appear to have only been charged with misdemeanor trespass.

The incident is one of several involving illegal immigrants this year as the crisis at the southern border has become a central political issue, and some Republicans have linked the incident in Quantico to Biden administration policies.

The administration accuses Republicans of blocking reforms and funding to solve a historic crisis, while Republicans accuse the administration of rolling back successful Trump-era policies and ultimately fueling the crisis.
