Border Patrol Rescues Illegal Immigrants from Heat-Related Illnesses

Recently, U.S. Border Patrol agents in the challenging terrains east of San Diego were called to action twice to assist migrants suffering from illnesses induced by extreme heat.

Unlike the time when high numbers of migrants willingly reported themselves to authorities during the Biden border crisis, many undocumented individuals are now crossing secretly to avoid detection. This often takes place in regions where harsh conditions can pose serious health risks.

The first incident happened around 3 PM on August 1, when officers at the Odori Station were alerted by local police regarding a missing individual in the Jacumba Mountains. The report indicated that the person might have been in a medical emergency and lacking sufficient water. Symptoms such as disorientation and blurred vision were noted, suggesting heat exhaustion.

With temperatures soaring to about 107 degrees Fahrenheit, Border Patrol agents from the San Diego Sector Boulevard station began a search of the rugged area, coordinating with their colleagues from the El Centro Sector. They quickly assembled essential supplies like water and ice before heading out to find the individual right after receiving the assistance request.

Agents scoured the remote location and eventually found the missing person. While they provided initial medical aid, it became apparent that more treatment was required. Officials then coordinated with air support and local emergency services to rescue the individual, who was identified as having entered the U.S. illegally. The person was airlifted to the Jacumba Interchange near Interstate 8, where an ambulance took him to a hospital for treatment of heat-related issues.

Another incident unfolded on July 26 at 7 PM, when a Border Patrol agent using surveillance technology spotted someone walking near Cottonwood Canyon. Other agents arrived on the scene and located the individual in less than an hour.

Upon assessment, it was clear that the person was in bad shape, struggling to leave the canyon without aid. Emergency medical services assisted Border Patrol agents in extracting the man from the ravine, and an ambulance transported him to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. This individual was also found to be in the U.S. illegally.

Commenting on the risks posed by cartel smugglers exploiting remote areas, Chief Patrol Agent Justin De La Torre remarked, “These rescues highlight the severe dangers presented by the treacherous terrain and the intense summer heat. They also emphasize that criminal cartels have no concern for the safety or lives of the individuals they take advantage of.”

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the two individuals rescued, found to be unlawfully in the U.S., are set to be deported after receiving medical clearance.
