An illegal immigrant detained after a barricade shooting in North Carolina was reportedly on a terrorist watch list and had lived in the area for six months, authorities said.
Awet Hagos, 32, is a national of Eritrea, a small country on the coast of northeastern Africa, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Immigration officials said Hagos entered the country illegally after living in Haiti and had been living in North Carolina for the past six months.
Authorities allegedly took Hagos’ fingerprints and discovered he was on a terrorist watch list.

The Gates County Sheriff’s Office said they were first alerted to Hagos during a barricade incident at a Kwik Stop gas station.
According to police, on Monday, March 11th, around 6:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting.
Local authorities, along with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, attempted to take Hagos into custody, but the suspect became “very belligerent” and attempted to get a firearm from law enforcement agents.

After the altercation, Wagos fled into his home and led police into a four-hour standoff, police said.

Hagos was eventually taken into custody without incident and charged with three counts of assault on a government official, three counts of resisting a public servant, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
Hagos was held on $100,000 bond and transported to Albemarle Regional Jail.
Three Republicans, Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger, and House Speaker Tim Moore, are running for governor after reports that Hagos is an illegal immigrant and on a terrorist watch list. sent a letter to President Joe Biden.
The leaders called on Biden to provide more information about Hagos and details about his alleged terrorist activities.
“It is our understanding that this violent individual is from nearby Yemen, a known hotbed of anti-American terrorist activity,” the letter said.

“Clearly, this is a grave concern not only for North Carolinians, but for the entire nation,” the letter reads.
