Illinois Democrat shares video of supposed ICE protest crime, now facing charges

Illinois Candidate Charged in ICE Protest Indictment

A Democratic congressional candidate from Illinois recently shared a video on social media that appears to illustrate the events outlined in a federal indictment accusing her of obstructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Kat Abu-Ghazaleh, who is 26 and describes herself as a “Gen Z influencer,” dismissed the charges as a “political prosecution.” She insists she was merely exercising her First Amendment rights, claiming she wasn’t breaking any laws.

“I have been indicted in a federal indictment sought by the Department of Justice. This political prosecution is an attack on all of our First Amendment rights. I will not back down, and we will prevail,” she expressed in a post on X.

On September 26, during a protest outside the ICE Broadview processing facility in suburban Chicago, federal prosecutors allege she became part of a mob that surrounded a law enforcement vehicle. Allegedly, someone defaced the vehicle with the word “PIG,” and she physically obstructed it before others damaged the mirrors and windshield wipers.

Video Evidence of the Incident

The indictment states that Abu-Ghazaleh participated in the blockade around 7:45 a.m., positioning herself directly in front of the vehicle, hands on the hood, effectively blocking it from moving.

The video seemingly corroborates this, showing her at the forefront of the crowd leaning over a black SUV with flashing lights, which was unmarked.

She presents herself as a radical progressive Democrat advocating for policies like a wealth tax on the richest Americans, a $25 minimum wage, and a clear path to citizenship for Dreamers and undocumented immigrants. Interestingly, her personal interests include knitting and playing video games.

Abu-Ghazaleh has vigorously opposed the previous administration’s stricter immigration policies. In a recent interview, she stated her belief that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem should face trial at The Hague, referring to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.

On Wednesday, a federal indictment was unsealed against her, presenting charges including conspiracy to obstruct a law enforcement officer and forcible obstruction. Five others involved in the protest also face charges.

Among those charged are two local political figures, Michael Rabbitt, a Democratic Commissioner for Chicago’s 45th District, and Catherine Sharp, a candidate for the Cook County Commission.

Abu-Ghazaleh is running in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District, aiming to succeed 81-year-old Democratic Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, who is stepping down after decades in office since 1999.
