Illinois Rep. Indicted in Fraud Case

Democratic Representative Carol Ammons from Illinois has been indicted for allegedly attempting a fraud scheme involving her husband and daughter, who works for a county employee.

The indictment claims that during the pandemic, Ammons illegally collected unemployment benefits and facilitated kickback payments from state funds, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Reportedly, Ammons funneled state grants to three nonprofit organizations, all of which employed her daughter, Titianna Ammons. Between 2017 and 2023, they supposedly benefited from over $100,000.

One notable nonprofit mentioned is Hood Vote Neighborhood Transformation, which allegedly received $605,000. Additionally, her daughter reportedly received nearly $16,000 in campaign funding, described as “disproportionate” to the actual services rendered.

Ammons is accused of misleading federal investigators about these transactions involving her daughter back in May 2024.

Furthermore, her husband, Aaron Ammons—who serves as the Champaign County Clerk—supposedly instructed her to “murky the waters” regarding key witnesses in the ongoing federal investigation, aimed at obstructing the FBI’s tracking of illicit cash payments to her.

Titianna Ammons has also been indicted previously, though she is not charged in the most recent allegations.

Illinois House Speaker Emanuel Welch stated that Ammons would be temporarily removed from House committees and barred from accessing specific resources but did not call for her resignation.

Welch noted the seriousness of the allegations and emphasized the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence.

Republican House Minority Leader Tony McCombie criticized Ammons and urged her to resign, stating that true leadership requires accountability, especially from one’s own members.

Ammons had faced allegations in the past for allegedly stealing a wallet from a thrift store; however, those charges were ultimately dropped by the special prosecutor.

Currently, Ammons is running for re-election, though she lacks an opponent in the race. As a veteran member of the Illinois House for 11 years, her campaign emphasizes her successes, including efforts to eliminate cash bail and ban chokeholds used by law enforcement.

She has also publicly expressed support for reparations, indicating that this remains a part of her platform.
