Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) said Wednesday he supports deporting illegal aliens convicted of violent crimes and is open to talks with President-elect Donald Trump.
Pritzker said this in response to recent comments from President Trump's border czar Tom Homan. WFLD He said he was open to removing some illegal immigrants from the country.
“I don't want them in my state.”
At an event in Chicago earlier this week, Homan gave a clear message to Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson that they either support the incoming administration's deportations or “get out of the way.” conveyed the message.
He vowed to begin the deportation program “right here in Chicago.”
“If the mayor of Chicago doesn't want to cooperate, stand aside. But if he gets in our way, harbors or hides illegal aliens, I will prosecute him. ” Homan warned.
Chicago is a sanctuary city, prohibiting local law enforcement from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to assist in deportation proceedings.
Homan has repeatedly argued that these policies protect criminal illegal aliens. He also noted that efforts by liberal state and local leaders to thwart deportation efforts will only result in ICE deploying more agents to those communities. Mr Homan explained that Mr Johnson's pledge to protect illegal immigrants would produce “the exact results he's complaining about”.
Pritzker initially declined to respond to Homan's comments.
“Instead of responding to each of Trump's henchmen's ridiculous boasts, Governor Pritzker is concentrating on what Trump's first term was all about: competence, not chaos,” the governor said. “It's about leading the state.”
But on Wednesday, Pritzker said He claimed to support the deportation of violent illegal aliens.
“Violent criminals who are in the United States illegally and have been convicted of violent crimes should be deported,” Pritzker said. “I don't want them in my state. I don't think they should be in the United States.”
He said he would welcome talks with Homan and the incoming Trump administration, but claimed he had not heard from anyone.
Last month, Pritzker said MSNBC host Joy Reid called illegal immigrants “inhabitants of our state” and said she would do everything she could to “protect them.”
“I want to be clear that there are certain circumstances in which the federal and state governments should work together to allow deportation. An example of this is someone who has been convicted of a violent crime.” Ta.
“But they're talking about rounding up law-abiding illegal immigrants in this country, many of whom work and pay taxes but receive no benefit from those taxes. I might add,” Pritzker said. I entered the country illegally.
He argued that President Trump's mass deportation plan “could violate the Constitution.”
