Toilet Politics Heat Up in Illinois

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker recently encouraged Democrats to, perhaps somewhat provocatively, use restrooms of the opposite gender as a form of protest against President Trump’s decision to revoke protections for transgender students. This policy change, which was initially established during the Obama administration, allows students to use facilities that align with their gender identity.

During a heated session of the House Oversight Committee, Republican Representative Brandon Gill from Texas referenced Pritzker’s tweet, which stated, “Everyone should use other gender toilets today in protest of Trump’s withdrawal protection against trans kids! #ProtectTranskids.”

The tweet came soon after Trump’s administration made the move to end the protections that had been set up by Obama.

In the hearing, Gill confronted Pritzker with a series of questions. “Do you think biological men should be able to use women’s toilets?” he asked, sparking a fiery exchange between the two. Pritzker seemed unsure how the question related to immigration but urged Gill to provide evidence from that 2017 tweet.

Gill continued to press, asking Pritzker directly if he had ever used a women’s restroom. Pritzker replied somewhat ambiguously, saying, “It’s not that I can’t remember.” This response prompted Gill to suggest that while Pritzker was advocating for others to take such actions, he wasn’t personally engaging in the same behavior.

Another Democrat from Illinois intervened, arguing that he wasn’t defending the actions of biological men in women’s restrooms and questioned whether Pritzker regretted his past tweet. Gill took this challenge further, asking if Pritzker had ever felt unwelcome in a female restroom.

In response, Pritzker called the discussion a mere political circus, asserting that it had little to do with immigration, suggesting instead that it was grandstanding on Gill’s part.

Gill escalated the confrontation by accusing Pritzker of endorsing men using women’s bathrooms, particularly concerning the safety of minor girls. He further questioned whether the governor supported Hamas’ agenda, which Pritzker firmly denied, instead highlighting his own efforts to combat anti-Semitism.
