Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton will not support Schumer as the Senate leader.

During a recent debate for Illinois’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton made it clear that she would not support Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer if he wins re-election. This stance set her apart from other Democratic candidates who were more uncertain about their support for Schumer.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi mentioned that he hadn’t decided yet but would consider Schumer’s arguments before making a call. He expressed his indecision during the debate hosted by WBEZ and other organizations as they gear up for the March 2026 Democratic primary.

On the other hand, Rep. Robin Kelly indicated that her support would depend on Schumer’s opponent in the race. However, Stratton stood firm in her refusal, noting that she had already declared her position against Schumer.

“No, I have already said that I do not support Chuck Schumer as leader of the Senate, and I am the only person on this platform to say that,” she asserted.

Schumer’s office did not respond to requests for comment about this debate. The conversation comes at a time of increased frustration among Democrats regarding Senate leadership, especially following the extended government shutdown that began last October.

Many within the party have expressed their dissatisfaction with Schumer. For instance, Rep. Ro Khanna from California has been vocal about his belief that Schumer should be replaced, stating on social media that he is “no longer effective.” He added, “If you can’t lead the fight to stop rising health care costs for Americans, what are you going to fight for?”

Rep. Rashida Tlaib echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that Schumer is out of touch with the needs of the American populace, calling for a leader who prioritizes working people.
