Thanksgiving Arson Arrest in Illinois
A man from Illinois has been taken into custody after allegedly setting his family’s home ablaze, reportedly following a heated argument on Thanksgiving Day, according to police reports.
Eric J. Crump, 21 years old, faces charges of aggravated arson and residential arson related to the incident.
On Thursday evening, around 7:30 PM, deputies were dispatched to a residence on North Lone Oak Road in Beach Park after receiving a report of a dispute.
Initially, authorities found no evidence of a crime, but family members indicated that Crump was becoming increasingly agitated, causing tension among those present.
After calming the situation, deputies suggested that Crump spend the night away from his family.
Approximately an hour later, fire crews returned to the residence after reports of a fire had come in.
Upon arrival, firefighters spotted a man fitting Crump’s description near the road, holding a knife and fleeing the scene.
Authorities quickly established a perimeter, and a sheriff’s K9 tracked Crump’s scent to a nearby cul-de-sac, indicating he might have left in a vehicle.
Later, he was located at a storage facility on North Lewis Avenue without any complications during the arrest.
Investigations revealed that Crump had been informed of his impending eviction from the home after the earlier conflict.
It’s alleged that he returned, using an accelerant to ignite a bedroom before escaping as the flames grew, resulting in significant damage.
Fortunately, his family noticed the smoke and managed to evacuate promptly.
“It’s certainly fortunate that no injuries or fatalities occurred due to this reckless act,” stated Sheriff John D. Idleburg. “While many families in Lake County were enjoying Thanksgiving, our dispatchers and deputies were responding to this incident.”
He added, “Our teams acted swiftly to secure the area, ensure the fire was extinguished, and apprehended this individual, protecting others from further risk. I am incredibly proud of their professionalism and dedication to community safety, day in and day out.”
After reviewing the situation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office decided to move forward with charges of arson and aggravated residential arson.
