Authorities in Illinois have arrested a man accused of drugging his pregnant girlfriend with abortion pills, resulting in a miscarriage. Emerson Evans, 31, faces two counts of intentional murder of a fetus, as reported by Bloomington police.
According to the police, officers responded to a medical emergency at their home around 7 PM on a Friday. During their investigation, they discovered that Evans had administered abortion medication to his girlfriend without her consent, leading to the unfortunate miscarriage. Although abortion is legal in Illinois, intentionally causing a miscarriage can lead to a minimum of 20 years in prison for each charge.
The pregnant woman, who was seven weeks along, began having medical issues after taking the medication, eventually losing her fetus. Reports indicate that Evans inserted four Mifepristone tablets into her body, while the usual method of administration is oral, recommending just one pill.
Police Chief Jamal Simmington expressed sorrow over the alleged incident, stating, “It’s disappointing to see cases where individuals have caused harm to others.” He commented on the community’s strength and hoped for the mother’s recovery.
During a court hearing, Judge Amy McFarland mentioned that Evans, when speaking to police, implied he had “decided” for his girlfriend, noting that the number of tablets used showed a lack of understanding regarding consent. She remarked, “He wanted to impose his beliefs without considering the consequences, including taking a life.”
This situation continues to be under scrutiny, with Evans expected to face further legal actions come September 12th.
