Illinois police officers will not be charged in the deadly shooting of an unarmed man in his home

An Illinois police officer will not be charged in the shooting death of an unarmed man in a darkened bedroom of his own home.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said Wednesday that Carol Stream police officers who claimed self-defense failed to prove “the use of deadly force was not legally justified” against 30-year-old Isaac Goodloe. Associated Press.

“Any loss of life is truly tragic,” Berlin said, “but criminal charges will only be brought where there is sufficient evidence to support guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Goodloe died in a hospital after the shooting, which happened Feb. 3 in Carol Stream, Illinois, about 34 miles from Chicago.

Police responded to a late-night 911 call from a woman who reported Goodloe had beaten her before fleeing the apartment they shared.

The woman, Goodloe’s girlfriend, suffered bruising around her eye and blood from her lip.

Police said officers made their presence known for about an hour, but Goodloe would not open the door, before a building employee gave the officers a key and six officers finally entered the home.

Berlin said body camera footage showed Goodloe’s “knee or thigh sticking out of the bedroom door” when the officer used his foot to open it.

The officer shot Goodloe in the chest and told investigators that Goodloe “was either pointing something at me, throwing something at me or reaching for the gun.”

“Goodloe’s sudden and aggressive behavior left me intimidated and I felt threatened, which forced me to fire my firearm,” the officer told investigators.

Berlin said Goodloe had previously told his girlfriend that if she called 911 police would have to kill him or he would commit suicide.

Goodloe’s sister filed a lawsuit against the officer and the police department, alleging excessive force.
