Carmelo Anthony Murder Trial Updates
CBS News reported that all Black jurors have been excluded from the Carmelo Anthony murder trial, which has garnered attention. Prosecutors and defense lawyers have narrowed the pool of 589 potential jurors down to just 12 jurors and six alternates. The jury selection process began on June 1 in Collin County, Texas. During this phase, prospective jurors were asked whether Anthony’s age might affect their judgment.
One juror expressed concern, remarking, “He’s like a child. We can’t send him to prison. Maybe he can learn from his mistakes.” Another said, “I saw a childish person – I can’t judge a verdict.” A different potential juror brought up racial factors, stating, “I don’t know if I feel it’s right to put my brother in jail.”
Along with race and age, another juror mentioned their religious beliefs, saying, “Punishing someone would violate my religious views.”
Anthony is facing first-degree murder charges for allegedly stabbing Austin Metcalf back in April 2025. Allegedly, Anthony claimed that Metcalf “put his hands on” him during a confrontation at a track meet, which led to Metcalf’s death.
Witness accounts describe Anthony, a 17-year-old student, sitting under a tent at a track event when he was told to leave. One witness stated that Metcalf, a student from another school, pushed Anthony away, after which Anthony reportedly took out a knife and stabbed Metcalf in the chest. According to police records, Anthony later questioned what would happen if he claimed “self-defense.”
In July 2025, Collin County Judge John Roach Jr. issued a gag order regarding the case. The trial is anticipated to last about two weeks.
