ICE Operation in Minneapolis Draws Tension

A recent photo surfaced showing a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer brandishing a weapon aimed at someone in Minneapolis who allegedly tried to interfere with an enforcement operation.

According to Tricia McLaughlin, an Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, the operation was focused on apprehending an Ecuadorian national who has been charged with assault. This occurred in Minneapolis on a Tuesday.

McLaughlin explained that two individuals began following the officers, attempting to disrupt their work by blocking an ICE vehicle with a gate—this action constitutes both a felony and a federal crime. While the officers managed to re-open the gate and leave the scene, the individuals tried to close it again, trying to hinder the operation. As they departed, these individuals were reportedly making gestures that implied they were armed.

“Obstructing federal law enforcement is dangerous and illegal,” McLaughlin remarked. “This situation has caused issues for the ICE operation.”

There have been reports, from various sources, of police knocking on doors in the area, while several vehicles followed the officers through south Minneapolis. The officers eventually stopped one of the vehicles and ordered the occupants out at gunpoint.

A witness at the scene mentioned seeing at least one person, who displayed an anti-ICE message, being handcuffed and lying face down on the ground.

Images circulated showing an individual in handcuffs wearing a hat and a belt with a derogatory phrase related to ICE.

McLaughlin added that the suspects involved in the incident have, according to her, been allowed into the U.S. under the current administration, and search warrants have been issued for their apprehension.
