Important to Ensure American Safety by Mandating English Skills for Truck Drivers

Truck Driver English Proficiency Advocated by Lawmaker

Representative Byron Donald (R-FL) emphasized the importance of ensuring that American truck drivers can communicate effectively in English during a recent appearance on Breitbart News.

When host Matthew Boyle inquired about the new laws being introduced, Donald explained their significance. It’s worth noting that many truck drivers tune into this show nationwide, particularly on the Sirius XM Patriot Channel.

Following a tragic incident in Florida, Governor DeSantis and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson initiated a strategy to enhance safety on state highways by implementing proficiency checks at various measuring stations, alongside evaluations of Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs).

Donald discussed his conversation with Simpson regarding their plans, saying, “I asked him about the specifics of what they were doing.”

“We need to have proficiency checks and CDL assessments at all interstate federal metering stations… Yes, we ensure licensing, but also, English proficiency is crucial for reading road signs and ensuring safety,” he stated.

He added, “It’s concerning if truck drivers can’t even understand the signs.” Donald, reflecting on his extensive highway driving experience, pointed out the complexities of navigating large vehicles compared to regular cars. His goal is clear: safety on the roads.

“It’s straightforward. We might consider withholding federal transportation funding from certain states that choose not to comply with these measures,” he stated, mentioning that states that want to remain sanctuary will face consequences in terms of federal tax money.

“I hope this legislation will gain momentum on Capitol Hill, allowing us to advance this bill in Congress,” Donald concluded.
