Speaking to union members in Detroit on Labor Day, Vice President Harris criticized former President Trump for blocking overtime pay and giving tax cuts to the wealthy.
Tyrese West, a member of the Workers International Union of North America, Harris was introduced On Monday, several union leaders took to the stage, including United Auto Workers President Sean Fain.
Harris said President Trump is “trying to take us back” to a time when workers weren't free to form unions.
“As president, Donald Trump will always be remembered for blocking overtime pay for millions of workers and for opposing efforts to raise the minimum wage, something Tyrese talked about a little bit, but he didn't,” Harris said. “He appointed union busters to the National Labor Relations Board and supported so-called right-to-work laws.”
“We're not turning back,” Harris told the crowd, using her now-popular catchphrase.
Harris said that if Trump is re-elected, he would give tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations. He said that Trump would impose taxes on everyday items that would cost the typical American family an extra $4,000 a year.
If elected, Harris said she would fight for a future where all workers have the “freedom to organize,” and that as president she would pass legislation protecting the right to organize and “end union busting once and for all.”
Harris highlighted Detroit's role in the labor movement and praised the work that unions have accomplished for ordinary Americans.
“Everywhere I go I tell people: You might not be a union member, but you better thank a union member for your five-day work week, you better thank a union member for your sick days, you better thank a union member for your paid holidays, you better thank a union member for your vacation days,” she said.
“Higher union wages mean higher wages for everyone. Safer union workplaces mean safer workplaces,” Harris continued. “Strong unions make America stronger.”
Now that she's finished speaking, Harris is on her way to Pennsylvania, where she will join President Biden at another Labor Day event focused on the state's unions, where she is expected to voice her opposition to the sale of U.S. Steel.
