In-N-Out is raising its notoriously low prices to keep up with California’s new $20 minimum wage for fast-food restaurants.
In Los Angeles County, the low-cost burger chain’s double-double burger combo is selling for $11.44, up $0.76 from last year. KTLA reported.
At the tourist-popular Fisherman’s Wharf location in San Francisco, a double-double burger comes with fries and a drink for $13.63 including tax.
Customers who aren’t hungry will have to pay $7.50 for the double patty, without any sides or drinks. KRON 4 reported.
The same menu items with just one patty aren’t much cheaper: the hamburger is $11.03 including tax, and the cheeseburger is $11.57 including tax.
While still on the rise, prices are significantly lower outside of San Francisco.
In Daily City, in the San Francisco Bay area, a double-double with fries and a drink costs $11.52, more than $2 cheaper than in Fisherman’s Wharf.
In Daily City, the cheeseburger and hamburger sets are priced at $9.54 and $8.99, respectively, including tax.
An In-N-Out spokesperson confirmed to KRON 4 that the price hikes are directly related to the $20 minimum wage increase that went into effect in April.
Fast food restaurants across California have since cut about 10,000 jobs, according to the California Business and Industry Federation.
Rubio’s California Grill, known for its fish tacos, closed 48 of its approximately 134 locations at the end of May and filed for bankruptcy in June.
Starbucks stores in California are increasing drink prices by 50 cents starting April 1, while Taco Bell is raising menu prices by 3%.
