Closure of Local Health Center Raises Concern in New Hampshire

For over two decades, Susan Bushby, a 70-year-old housekeeper living in a small ski town in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, found solace in her nearby health center. This lodge-like facility, overlooking the town, felt like a second home to her and others. The staff were familiar faces, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries with patients. The walls adorned with nature photos, and casual conversations in the waiting room were a staple of her visits.

That comfort came to an abrupt halt last month when this community health service site in Franconia, a town with around 1,000 residents, closed its doors permanently.

Concerns Grow Following Closure

Local officials have faced backlash over Medicaid cuts, which threaten access to healthcare for many. With around 1,400 patients, a significant portion being elderly and dealing with serious health issues like cancer, the nearest health center is now a 10-mile drive away along winding rural roads. The next option is even further.

“I was extremely upset. I felt really angry,” Bushby shared, tearing up as she reflected on the difficulties of transitioning to a new health center. “I truly liked it there. It’s just hard to put into words, but I’m really going to miss it. It’s just sad.”

This closing highlights broader issues facing community health services amid increasing Medicaid cuts and rising insurance premiums, which put additional strain on local healthcare systems. Recent legislative changes regarding Affordable Care Act tax credits exacerbate these challenges.

Patients Feel the Impact

Marcia Luce, who relocated from the Washington, D.C. area in 2000, expressed concern for her husband, a 72-year-old former firefighter with significant health issues, including cancer and heart problems. The closure worries her about longer wait times and the loss of vital relationships built over the years.

“It’s going to be tough,” Luce said. “You can lose that personal connection with your doctors. They know your history; they understand you. It’s different discussing serious health matters with someone new.”

The Bigger Picture

More than 100 hospitals across the country have shuttered in the past decade, with over 700 more at risk. This particular health center in New Hampshire is not alone; others also face closures due to shifts in funding and reimbursement structures.

“Rural hospitals will feel the brunt of these Medicaid cuts,” remarked Senator Maggie Hassan. “If we can’t extend those ACA tax credits, the situation is only going to worsen. Without coverage, more patients may end up in emergency rooms or find themselves foregoing care altogether.”

The closure resonates deeply within the community. Bushby, like many others, will need to adapt to a significant change. “It’s heartbreaking when healthcare leaves your community,” she noted. “Even as we assist patients in the transition, it’s still like mourning the loss of something important.”

While the closure itself may not stir much public outcry, it reflects wider fears about the sustainability of healthcare in rural areas where many patients are older, sicker, and have fewer resources.

For people like Jill Brewer, head of the Franconia Regional Select Board, the longer-term consequences are unsettling. “Is this the first domino to fall?” she pondered, recalling the community’s recent loss of its volunteer ambulance service. “There’s real apprehension that these closures might trigger even bigger problems down the road.”

Final Day Reflections

On the clinic’s last day, there were no fanfare or goodbyes. Everything felt routine, even as the staff dismantled the clinic. Bushby, coming in for a simple check-up, shared warm hugs with the team. “I’ll see you again, I will,” she promised. “I’ve genuinely enjoyed being here.”
