Income Tax filing deadline: Will there be an extension? IT department provides update

Upcoming Deadline for Income Tax Returns

With just two days remaining until the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR), the Income Tax Bureau announced on Saturday that over $6 trillion in tax returns have been submitted so far.

This number is likely to increase as many rush to complete their submissions. The deadline to file ITRs without incurring any penalties is September 15, so there’s really no time to waste. As of now, there have been no announcements regarding extensions.

The Income Tax Division shared this update on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, highlighting that their help desk is available 24/7 throughout the year to assist anyone needing help with their returns.

The post also encouraged those who haven’t yet submitted their ITRs to do so promptly to prevent a last-minute scramble.

“We appreciate taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone of 6 trillion income tax returns counted so far,” the post stated.

“To assist taxpayers with ITR applications, payments, and related inquiries, our help desk operates around the clock, providing support via phone, live chat, WebEx sessions, and on Twitter/X,” it continued.

Those who have yet to file their ITR for the 2025-26 assessment period are urged to do so as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute rush and keep the momentum going.

A significant relief for taxpayers this year is the extension of the ITR submission deadline from July 31 to September 15. This is for income tax returns relevant to the 2025-26 assessments, covering earnings from the 2024-25 fiscal year.

This extension followed a “Structure and Content Revision” of the ITR Form, which was announced between late April and early May.

There has been a steady increase in income tax returns over recent years. For the 2024-25 assessment, 7.28 crore ITRs were submitted by July 31, 2024, while the total for the 2023-24 assessment was 6.77 crore ITRs.
