President-elect Donald Trump's border czar Thomas Homan met with New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Thursday to discuss how sanctuary cities should help deport illegal aliens who have committed crimes from the United States. We discussed how we can work together with the next administration.
Adams recently expressed openness to working with Trump on deportation, saying: said of new york times He requested a meeting with Homan.
in statement Adams told CBS News New York that he spoke with Homan about how the mayor's office could use its authority to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in deporting criminally illegal aliens. .
“We're looking at ways to use executive powers to go after dangerous and violent people,” Adams told CBS News. “…I have made it clear that I am not going to fight his administration, I am going to work with his administration.”
Homan told a crowd in the sanctuary city of Chicago, Illinois, this week that local Democrats must not prevent the incoming Trump administration from enforcing federal immigration laws that require illegal aliens to be detained while they await deportation.
“We start here in Chicago, Illinois. If the mayor of Chicago doesn't want to help, he can stand down,” Homan said. “But if he gets in our way, if he knowingly harbors or conceals illegal aliens, I will prosecute him.”
New York City Councilman Robert Holden (D-Queens), who opposes the city's sanctuary law, praised Adams for meeting with Homan.
We applaud the Mayor's strong stance in declaring that New York City is not a safe haven for criminal immigrants. And for directing his legal team to consider ways to ensure public safety. This is an important step in the right direction, and as Mayor he must use his full legal authority to protect New Yorkers. [Emphasis added]
Mr. Holden recently led a group of Republicans and Democrats in the New York City Council to call on Mr. Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) to repeal all sanctuary policies in the state.
“To demonstrate a true commitment to public safety, Mayor Adams will reopen the Rikers Island ICE office, have the NYPD, Department of Corrections, and Probation Department communicate with ICE to honor criminal immigrant detainees.” Mayor Holden wrote to Adams. .
Since the Biden-Harris administration took office, New York City has been flooded with hundreds of thousands of migrants, most of whom were released directly into the interior of the United States by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Following Vice President Kamala Harris' loss in last month's presidential election, Adams slammed Harris and President Joe Biden's border policies.
“We should all be angry about what has happened to our city under this administration,” Adams said of the wave of illegal immigration that New York City has faced over the past four years.
