Heightened Security in Iran Amidst Unrest

In response to potential unrest, security forces have significantly increased their presence in Tehran and other major cities across Iran. The government’s preparation comes during heightened tensions with the United States.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump commented on the situation, emphasizing the visible police activity in Tehran, which has intensified following weeks of anti-government protests that started in late December over economic grievances. A violent crackdown on these protests resulted in thousands of deaths. Trump also noted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) seem to be in a state of panic.

According to local observers and monitoring groups, there has been a substantial deployment of security personnel in northwestern cities like Ardabil and Kermanshah. Reports indicate that police vehicles, foot patrols, and various forces are strategically positioned throughout the capital at unprecedented levels.

Security measures were heightened after two explosive incidents occurred on Saturday. An explosion in an eight-story residential building in Bandar Abbas resulted in the death of one child, with 14 others injured. Additionally, a gas explosion in Khuzestan province claimed the lives of five individuals.

Reports identified the child victim in Bandar Abbas as a four-year-old girl. Notably, Israel has denied any involvement in the explosions.

Iranian officials attributed both incidents to gas leaks and rejected allegations of any military operations being connected. The Revolutionary Guards dismissed social media claims suggesting that one of its naval commanders was targeted.

This explosion coincided with the Revolutionary Guards’ plans to conduct live-fire naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend. The U.S. Central Command issued a warning to Tehran, cautioning that “dangerous and unprofessional actions” near U.S. forces and commercial vessels could escalate conflicts. Meanwhile, the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group has been repositioning near Iran.

As tensions continue, three weeks have passed since the government took violent measures against protesters, resulting in a quieter atmosphere in the country. Reports also indicate that officers are scrutinizing mobile devices for evidence of participation in prior demonstrations.

In reaction to the government’s crackdown, the European Union has designated the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization.
