Pew Research Survey Reveals Changing Views on Religion in America

A recent survey by Pew Research indicates that a notable number of Americans feel that religion is becoming more influential in society. Currently, 37% of respondents believe that religion’s role is increasing, marking a shift in perception over the last few years.

Interestingly, 61% hold the opposite view, suggesting that religion is actually losing influence in modern American life. This aligns with observable trends reflecting a significant decline in religious sentiment in recent times.

The findings highlight a 19-point increase in the perception of growing religious influence over the past two years, bringing figures back to levels seen in a 2002 survey.

A majority, 55%, of those who sense an increase in religious influence view it positively. However, only 17% advocate for Christianity to be declared the official religion of the U.S. An additional 43% support the idea of promoting Christian moral values without making any official declarations.

Meanwhile, 38% of respondents believe the U.S. should neither declare Christianity the official religion nor promote Christian moral values at all. When asked about the potential conflict between the Bible and popular opinion regarding American law, 28% favored biblical influence, while 21% leaned toward public sentiment. Notably, 48% stated that the Bible should have little to no bearing on U.S. law.

This survey was conducted from April 6 to 12, 2026, ahead of the Trump administration’s grand “250 Year Rededication” event planned for May 17 on the National Mall. This celebration will kick off a year-long jubilee, during which Americans aim to rededicate the nation to its Creator and seek guidance for the next 250 years.

In a related context, President Trump expressed a desire to return the nation to its foundational principles like individual liberty and self-governance, emphasizing the significance of God in this process. Ambassador Monica Crowley remarked that the Founding Fathers understood they needed divine assistance to establish the nation and, similarly, America must seek God’s guidance as it moves forward.

Crowley stated, “This national celebration is about prayer, faith, and gratitude for the blessings we’ve received over the past 250 years.” She emphasized the importance of renewing faith and uniting as a community under God.
