Ralph Norman Announces Bid for South Carolina Governor in 2026

Republican Representative Ralph Norman from South Carolina, a notable figure in the Freedom Caucus, officially declared his candidacy for the governor’s race in 2026 on Friday.

Launching his campaign via his website, Norman expressed that it has been an “honor” to serve in Congress, but emphasized a desire to return to his roots. He stated, “I was born and raised here, and I want to help protect the values of our state.” Norman believes that South Carolina needs leadership from individuals with business backgrounds.

In a statement on his campaign site, he remarked, “I am a businessman who got into politics to make a difference for our people. I think having businessmen as governors in South Carolina is essential.”

Furthermore, Norman laid out his vision for the state, including plans to improve infrastructure and education, while calling for significant reforms in what he describes as a fundamentally flawed political system. “I’m running to shake things up, clean up Columbia, and put an end to corruption,” he added.

Norman is expected to submit formal candidacy paperwork later on Friday, as confirmed by his campaign to the Associated Press. He also scheduled a “special announcement” event in Rock Hill, South Carolina for Sunday.

Having represented South Carolina’s Fifth Congressional District since 2017, Norman is known for being one of the House’s most conservative members. He is particularly recognized as a financial hawk.

Recently, he participated in a vote with House Republicans to support amendments aimed at compelling the Department of Justice to disclose documents related to Jeffrey Epstein’s case.

Norman has also been a prominent supporter of former President Trump’s policies but expressed concerns about certain financial aspects of Trump’s initiatives. He did, however, vote in favor of Trump’s signature legislative package on multiple occasions.

His candidacy comes as South Carolina faces a competitive political landscape, with various notable Republicans also vying for the governorship, including Lt. Col. Pamela Ebbett, Attorney General Alan Wilson, and Senator Josh Kimbrell. There are even rumors about Representative Nancy Mace considering a run, who wished Norman well in a recent social media post.

As of now, Norman’s campaign has not provided additional comments on the upcoming race.
