India Welcomes UK’s Decision on Chagos Islands
India expressed its approval on Thursday regarding the United Kingdom’s decision to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, which includes the notable Diego Garcia atoll, as part of a significant agreement.
This move marks a reversal of the UK’s claim dating back over 50 years.
As per the new agreement, the UK will maintain full responsibility for the security of the strategically important Diego Garcia.
In reaction, India reiterated its support for Mauritius’ “legitimate claims” over the Chagos Archipelago, aligning with its long-standing stance on “decolonization, respect for sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “We welcome the signing of a treaty between the UK and Mauritius concerning the return of Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia.”
According to the statement, “The formal resolution of the Chagos issue through this bilateral treaty is a significant milestone and a positive step for the region.”
It also highlighted that this agreement contributes to the understanding achieved between the two nations in October 2024, marking a key phase in Mauritius’ decolonization journey, rooted in international law and norms.
India reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating closely with Mauritius and other allied nations to enhance maritime security and regional stability, aiming for peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean area.
