Execution Scheduled for Indiana Man Convicted of Killing Police Officer
An Indiana man is on track to become the second person executed in the state since 2009. Benjamin Richie, 45, has been sentenced to die by lethal injection on May 20th, before sunrise, unless a last-minute legal intervention arises.
Richie has been on death row for over two decades for the 2000 shooting death of Beech Grove Police Officer Bill Tony. At just 20 years old, Richie participated in stealing a van near Indianapolis and fatally shot the 31-year-old officer—who was a father of two—during a chase.
The Beach Grove Police Department released a statement highlighting the impact of Officer Tony’s death on the community. They emphasized how dedicated he was to serving and protecting, stating, “Officer William Tony lost his life serving the community he lived in 25 years ago.”
Just last week, the Indiana parole board denied Richie’s plea for clemency. His legal team argued that he suffers from brain damage linked to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and early childhood abuse, which they claim impaired his ability to make sound decisions during the incident.
Richie expressed remorse, stating, “I ruined my life and the lives of others. I’m very sorry for that night.” Meanwhile, Tony’s family, during the Clemency Hearing, urged that it was time to move forward. His widow mentioned, “It’s time for us to close this chapter of my story, our story, and that’s when we remember Bill and not his death, but Bill’s life.”
Indiana Governor Mike Brown announced he would proceed with the execution, supporting the parole board’s unanimous recommendation. Despite ongoing legal challenges from Richie’s attorneys, the execution is set to go ahead, marking Indiana’s second execution in 15 years.
Indiana resumed executions last December after a hiatus due to a shortage of lethal drugs, and Richie’s case has gained attention amid ongoing discussions about capital punishment in the state.
