New Chicago Police Chief Charged with Felony

Earl D. Mayo, who serves as the police chief in New Chicago, Indiana, has been charged with a felony for allegedly selling a firearm that he acquired during an investigation to a pawn shop.

As reported, Mayo, 45, is facing multiple charges, including seven felonies. These charges encompass two counts of theft, two counts of official misconduct, one count of attempted obstruction of justice, and two counts of unlawful possession of anabolic steroids. Additionally, he faces a charge of misdemeanor theft.

Mayo was taken into custody on Friday in Clark County, Ohio, according to police. His father, Jerry Williams, is a major in the Indiana State Police and is running for sheriff in Lake County, Indiana.

Following his son’s arrest, Williams expressed concern in a statement, mentioning, “My wife and I, and our family, are deeply concerned by recent information regarding our son, New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo. We raised all of our children with a strong foundation of love, guidance, and values. Just like ourselves, we have always held our children to high standards.”

Williams conveyed that there is limited information about the incident at this point. He noted the troubling nature of the allegations and the challenge of reconciling them with their family values. He stated, “If Mr. Earl is ultimately found to have engaged in the conduct the government alleges, he must and should accept responsibility for his actions and face the consequences.”

Additionally, a 47-year-old woman named Taneka Roshawn Borders is implicated in the case. Investigators report that she assisted Mayo and is charged with attempted obstruction of justice and possession of anabolic steroids. Court records indicate that Borders allegedly went to the pawn shop with $600 to retrieve the gun on Mayo’s behalf.
