Former Olympic Canoe Racer Charged with Vandalism
David Hahn, a former U.S. Olympic canoe racer, was charged on Thursday for vandalizing a reflecting pool in Washington, D.C. The charge, specifically one count of criminal damage to property, was filed in a local court after Hahn mentioned to the Associated Press that he had reached into the pool to “examine the newly peeled coating.”
The 67-year-old, who lives in Bethesda, Maryland, previously ran a company that manufactured composite materials for shipbuilding. He stated that he stopped at the pool while on a 64-mile bike ride.
Hahn reported being detained for five hours by National Guard troops and park police before his release.
In light of the incident, President Trump noted that federal authorities have arrested several individuals connected to the destruction of the reflecting pool. This situation has raised questions about a restoration project costing over $14 million, initiated to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, which seems to have gone awry.
Janine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, shared that officials from the National Park Service accused Hahn of “forcefully and violently pulling up and removing the bottom liner with both hands” on June 19, causing damage to about two square feet of sealant.
During a press conference, Pirro stated, “Park officials actually told Mr. Hahn to stop what he was doing.” According to her, Hahn responded by vocalizing his frustration towards the staff, questioning why they cared about the pool if it wasn’t theirs.
Witness accounts described Hahn as “belligerent and disrespectful,” with claims that he intentionally caused the damage.
Hahn’s attorneys, Norm Eisen and Mary Dorman, refute the allegations and argue that the Trump administration is using him as a scapegoat.
They conveyed, “Davey Hahn is innocent. These charges are outrageous and should alarm all Americans. This indictment reflects the administration’s efforts to shift responsibility for its own failures. On the eve of our nation’s Independence Day, Americans should be deeply concerned about the abuse of government power against ordinary citizens based on fabricated narratives. The judicial system exists to determine facts, not provide political patronage.”
